The Railway Gardens team is growing – welcome to Catrin!

Thanks to funding from Natural Resources Wales we have recently welcomed a new team member at Railway Gardens. Catrin Jones is the project's new Education and Youth Engagement Officer, and her role will include work with schools, families, and young people. Here's Catrin to tell you a little about herself, and about what you can expect from our educational and learning opportunities - i ddarllen y fersiwn Gymraeg, sgroliwch i lawr.

I am absolutely thrilled to join the team at Railway Gardens as Education and Youth Engagement Officer. Mine will be the face that you see if you come along to our Forces of Nature club after school on Wednesdays or to our Wild Things nature activities for all the family drop in on Saturday mornings. There will also be opportunities for school groups and other educational groups in the area to visit us in the new year. Please get in touch if you would like to know more!

I am a qualified teacher with over twelve years experience. I started as a teaching assistant at a local primary school while running a club after school and nannying during the summer holidays. After completing my primary PGCE I began teaching Psychology A-level (my favourite subject!) and worked closely with the school’s ALN department. I am so excited to start my new role at Railway Gardens and hope that my years of experience can help create an educational programme in which young people can come and learn about nature, sustainability and their environment, to guide them to become informed and ethical citizens in line with the new Curriculum for Wales and to have some fun!

I’m from Cardiff and live in Canton with my husband, our one year old boy and our labradoodle. We love visiting the local parks and going to the seaside. I enjoy all sorts of crafting, cooking, photography and yoga. I’m a lifelong Welsh speaker and received my education up to KS5 in Welsh. Please come and say ‘Shwmae!’ anytime!

I first came across Green Squirrel a few years ago when they were speaking at an event I was attending. I was impressed by their ability to talk about environmental issues in a warm and friendly way. I am even more impressed with what they have managed to achieve at Railway Gardens. With the help of the community and the amazing volunteers, they have overcome every barrier imaginable and have created a beautiful, welcoming space within the heart of Splott full of exciting things to see and do, with much more to come…

Rwyf wrth fy modd i ymuno â’r tîm yng Ngerddi Rheilffordd fel Swyddog Addysg ac Ymgysylltu Ieuenctid. Fy wyneb i fydd yr wyneb y byddwch chi’n ei weld os byddwch chi’n dod i’n clwb Grymoedd Natur ar ôl ysgol ar ddydd Mercher neu i Y Gwylltion sef gweithgareddau natur ar gyfer y teulu i gyd ar fore Sadwrn. Bydd cyfleoedd hefyd i grwpiau ysgol a grwpiau addysgol eraill yn yr ardal ymweld â ni yn y flwyddyn newydd. Cysylltwch os hoffech wybod mwy!

Rwy’n athro cymwysedig gyda dros ddeuddeg mlynedd o brofiad. Dechreuais fel cynorthwyydd addysgu mewn ysgol gynradd leol tra’n rhedeg clwb ar ôl ysgol a bod yn nani yn ystod gwyliau’r haf. Ar ôl cwblhau fy TAR cynradd dechreuais ddysgu Lefel A Seicoleg (fy hoff bwnc!) a gweithio’n agos gydag adran ADY yr ysgol. Rwyf mor gyffrous i ddechrau fy rôl newydd yn Gerddi Rheilffordd ac yn gobeithio y gall fy mlynyddoedd o brofiad helpu i greu rhaglen addysgol lle gall pobl ifanc ddod i ddysgu am natur, cynaliadwyedd a’u hamgylchedd, i’w harwain i ddod yn ddinasyddion gwybodus a moesegol yn unol â’r Cwricwlwm i Gymru newydd a chael hwyl hefyd!

Rwy’n byw yn Nhreganna gyda fy ngŵr, ein bachgen blwydd oed a’n labradoodle. Rydym wrth ein bodd yn ymweld â’r parciau lleol a mynd i lan y môr. Rwy’n mwynhau pob math o grefftio, coginio, ffotograffiaeth a yoga. Rwy’n siaradwr Cymraeg ac wedi derbyn fy addysg hyd at CA5 yn y Gymraeg. Dewch i ddweud ‘Shwmae!’ unrhyw bryd!

Fe wnes i ddod ar draws Green Squirrel am y tro cyntaf ychydig o flynyddoedd yn ôl pan oeddent yn siarad mewn digwyddiad yr oeddwn yn ei fynychu. Gwnaeth eu gallu i siarad am faterion amgylcheddol mewn ffordd gynnes a chyfeillgar argraff arnaf. Mae’r hyn y maent wedi llwyddo i’w gyflawni yng Ngerddi’r Rheilffordd wedi gwneud argraff fwy fyth arnaf. Gyda chymorth y gymuned a’r gwirfoddolwyr anhygoel, maent wedi goresgyn pob rhwystr y gellir ei ddychmygu ac wedi creu gofod hardd, croesawgar yng nghanol Sblot yn llawn o bethau cyffrous i’w gweld a’u gwneud, gyda llawer mwy i ddod…
