Volunteering opportunities

After-school club volunteers needed at Railway Gardens every Wednesday, 3 - 4:30pm
From late September we’ll be launching a weekly After School Club for primary aged pupils. Each week we’ll enjoy a mix of crafts, storytelling, games, play, and cookery on a different nature theme. We are looking for volunteers to support Green Squirrel staff to help make this a fun, welcoming and safe experience for families taking part.Who we’re looking for someone who:
  • enjoys helping children play and learn
  • is happy to give new things a go and have fun
In this role you will:
  • get hands on experience with outdoor/ nature education and play
  • develop your skills in working with children and families, communication, health and safety, and nature engagement.
If you’re interested in this role then please reply to this email – you don’t need to be available every Wednesday but a minimum of two Wednesdays each month would be ideal.

Welcome volunteers needed at Railway Gardens
If you love chatting with people and you’re looking for a relaxed role then this could be a great opportunity for you! We’re looking for Welcome Volunteers to be on site during opening times to help visitors feel welcome, answer their questions, show them around if they wish and offer more information. The site can get busy but it isn’t always – during quiet times it’s a good opportunity to catch up on a book or simply relax and watch the trains go by or potter in the community garden!We are looking for people who can do one or more of these regular slots:
  • 10am – 12:30pm and 12:30pm – 3pm on Thursdays
  • 10am – 12pm and 12 – 2pm on Saturdays
Note – you don’t need to be able to commit to every week to be a Welcome Volunteer – a couple of times per month is a huge help too!
In this role you will:
  • use your people skills to help everyone feel welcome
  • help keep visitors to the site safe
  • build your communication and customer service skills
  • get a snazzy Railway Gardens t-shirt!

Growing Group volunteers needed

The Railway Gardens Growing Group is a friendly group of local people who meet regularly to develop the community garden on site. No gardening experience needed!
